Lack of affordable low-income housing is one of the leading contributors to homelessness. Every year in the United States , 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, experience homelessness. The average age of a homeless person is 9 years old. In Montgomery County alone, on any day, there are over 300 homeless children and a total of 1,100 homeless people.
To teach our students about the problem of homelessness, Cloverly Elementary School will be holding its annual Help the Homeless Mini-Walk on Friday, November 6, 2009. On that day, ALL STUDENTS will participate in a Mini-Walk around the playground during their recess period. Family members, teachers and staff members are invited to join in this walk. Participants who wish to contribute to this cause should complete the registration form that has been sent home, make sure it is signed and return it with the appropriate fee ($15 for children, $25 for adults) to homeroom teachers by Monday, October 19th. They will receive a T-shirt to wear on the day of the walk. Additional family members who would like to register may copy the registration forms or go to the cloverlypta. com website where they can be downloaded.
Leading up to the Friday, November 6th Mini-Walk, there will be three activities. First, each classroom will make a banner to carry on this walk. Second, students will be invited to submit a creative work (poetry, essay or drawing) addressing the question “How Can I Help To End Homelessness?” Entries will be due on Friday, October 23rd and will be displayed. The classroom with the most entries will select a gift for the children in a homeless shelter. Third, books on this topic will be available to the children in the Media Center.
All funds raised by Cloverly will go to the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless, a community-based nonprofit organization that provides housing, emergency shelter, and supportive services for homeless families in our community. (www.mcch.net)
